After coming so close in 2023, all eyes are now on Jorge Martin and his Prima Pramac Racing crew to go one better in 2024. The Spaniard is the undisputed Tissot Sprint King, with a sensational nine out of a possible 19 victories going his way last year. Despite that, team boss Gino Borsoi still believes that he can be "even stronger" and "faster" this coming campaign after learning from their mistakes.
Mentally, though, how is the 25-year-old dealing with the emotional drain of getting to within touching distance of becoming the MotoGP™ World Champion? "It's difficult for us, yes," started Borsoi, speaking to motogp.com. "But also for everyone else to start a new season from zero is tough. Even if you finish the season before in a strong position, fighting for the Championship as Jorge was able to do.
"Now we have a new bike, a lot of riders have made changes, so you never know what will happen. One thing we know for sure is that the speed will still be there. We know that and Jorge knows that. But we have to make sure we demonstrate that again from the start of the new season.
"We’ve learned from some of the mistakes we made throughout 2023. From my point of view, we can be better than last year. We can be even stronger. If we’re intelligent, I think we can work out exactly what we need right from the beginning. Then, if we can avoid the small mistakes we made last year, we will have another chance to fight [for the World Championship]. We can be a little bit faster compared to last year, I think."
This looks set to be Martin's fourth and final season together with the Italian Independent outfit after stating he won't accept anything other than a factory bike in 2025. As a result, Borsoi believes the fact everyone within the team knows this is their final chance to achieve some special together will be an added incentive.
"Yeah, it’s an extra motivation to have that good scenario in front of you and becoming a factory rider. At the moment, we both can’t think about that too much, though. We need to be fully concentrated from the beginning because we have another great chance in front of us. We must be fully focused on that. Then, of course, if he does a good job again, I’m pretty sure he’ll have a chance to jump up to the factory team. He’s an incredible rider and, sooner or later, he will arrive there."
Martin and the Prima Pramac squad are back to work in just over a week when the Sepang Test gets underway. It will be a busy three days for them too, with Borsoi confirming they will be testing Ducati's much-talked-about, radically new aerodynamics package.
"We’ll have the chance to try that new aero in Sepang, yes. We’ll know in Sepang how good the upgrade is, but I’m pretty sure it will work. Normally, when Ducati brings something, it’s a step forward. Different is different, but how different I can’t say right now. You’ll all see it in Sepang. It’s not an incredible difference to last year but it’s a great update."
