Torres seals Cup glory in unbelievable fashion

MotoE™ has made a habit of producing drama filled races, but nobody could have predicted how the second race in Misano, and indeed the title, would be won. Matteo Ferrari (Indonesian E-Racing Gresini MotoE) would stand on the top step as a race winner, while Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) made it successive electric class World Cups, but only in the most sensational of circumstances.

Separated by eight points, it was a straight shoot-out between Torres and Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP) for glory and although it was Mattia Casadei (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse) who got the holeshot going into the first corner, the Cup leaders wouldn’t take long to move in front.

On the second lap, Torres had began to open up a considerable advantage which jolted Aegerter into action, the Swiss rider moving past Ferrari into P2. Coming into the final laps, the number 77 had closed the gap considerably to run side-by-side with the Spanish race leader, and threw the kitchen sink at it with the Cup at stake. Laying it all on the line, the two exchanged overtakes in a tit for tat battle, and while Torres didn’t need to win to take the title, he wasn’t backing out of the fight, and the Spaniard seemed to pay the price for his brazen approach with just three corners to go.

Aegerter shot up the inside of the Pons 40 racer which forced the reigning Champion to take drastic measures and eventually caused him to crash out of the race, and seemingly handing the title to the Dynavolt rider, who crossed the line first. However, the incident was immediately reviewed by Race Direction, who deemed it irresponsible riding and handed him a 38-second ride through penalty, and as a consequence, delivered the title back to a tearful Torres.

Ferrari, Casadei and Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team) were the rostrum finishers, but the day belongs to Jordi Torres, as he becomes the 2021 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup Champion!
